Background of the study
Media plays a transformative role in shaping language, and its impact on the morphological structure of Efik in Cross River State is of considerable interest. This study examines how traditional Efik morphology is altered under the influence of television, radio, and digital media. Efik, known for its rich morphological patterns, is experiencing shifts as media exposure introduces new lexical items and word-formation strategies. Contemporary research has shown that media can accelerate language change by exposing speakers to standardized forms and novel innovations from diverse linguistic sources (Okon, 2023). In Cross River State, the convergence of traditional oral literature and modern media practices creates a unique linguistic environment where morphological markers are reinterpreted, and new affixation or compounding patterns emerge (Edet, 2024). This investigation employs content analysis of media broadcasts and interviews with language users to document the extent of morphological change. By exploring how media influences morphological processes, the study aims to understand whether these changes enhance communication effectiveness or contribute to language attrition. The research also considers the role of media in bridging generational gaps in language use, thereby impacting cultural transmission (Udo, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Although media is recognized as a catalyst for linguistic change, its specific impact on Efik morphological structures in Cross River State remains underexplored. Observations suggest that media exposure introduces morphological innovations that deviate from traditional patterns, yet systematic studies are scarce (Okon, 2023). The lack of detailed analysis on media-induced morphological change hinders language planners and educators from developing strategies to maintain linguistic heritage while embracing modern influences. This gap is especially concerning given the rapid expansion of digital media, which may accelerate the erosion of traditional morphological markers (Edet, 2024). A comprehensive investigation is required to understand the mechanisms through which media affects Efik morphology and to propose measures for balancing innovation with preservation (Udo, 2025).
Objectives of the study:
To analyze the influence of media on Efik morphological change.
To document new morphological patterns emerging from media exposure.
To assess the implications of media-driven change for language preservation.
Research questions:
How does media exposure influence morphological structures in Efik?
What new word-formation processes emerge due to media influence?
How can traditional morphological features be preserved amid media-induced changes?
Research Hypotheses:
Media significantly alters traditional Efik morphological patterns.
New morphological forms in Efik are directly linked to media exposure.
There is a measurable impact of digital media on the evolution of Efik morphology.
Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it illuminates the role of media in shaping Efik morphology, providing insights for language preservation and curriculum development. Its findings will assist educators, media practitioners, and policymakers in striking a balance between innovation and tradition (Okon, 2023; Udo, 2025).
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to examining the impact of media on Efik morphological change in Cross River State. It focuses solely on morphological aspects without addressing broader communicative or phonological influences.
Definitions of terms:
Morphological Change: Alterations in word-formation processes.
Efik: An indigenous language spoken in Cross River State, Nigeria.
Media: Communication channels such as television, radio, and digital platforms.
